You sent your application and now? Nothing. No confirmation, no invitation, no rejection. Waiting is not easy, especially when you do not know what will happen next. In this article, you will find some tips on what you can do in this situation. 💚
There can be different reasons for this. In most cases, it is not your fault:
Your application may have been incomplete or had some mistakes. If a document is missing, like your CV or cover letter, the company might not consider your application. So before sending your application, make sure everything is complete.
The hiring process may still be going on. Many companies wait until they have received all applications before they start reviewing them.
There may be delays. Sometimes the recruitment team is very busy, sick, or on holiday. This can make the process slower.
You may still be under consideration. Rejections often come faster than job offers. So sometimes, no message can even be a good sign.
Maybe you are the second choice. Sometimes a company is waiting for a reply from another candidate. If that person says no, they may contact you.
If you have not received an answer after three to five weeks, it is completely okay to contact the company and ask for feedback on your application. Most companies see this in a positive way because it shows that you are really interested in the job.
Here are a few things you should keep in mind when asking for an update:
Include all important information. Write your name, the date of your application, and the job title. This helps the company find your application quickly.
Write in a friendly and respectful way. You are simply asking for an update, not blaming anyone. Being polite leaves a good impression.
Stay positive. Even if you have already waited a long time, try not to sound frustrated. For example: “As I am very interested in the position, I wanted to ask about the current status of the application process.”
Do not make accusations. Avoid sentences like: “I do not think it is okay that I have not heard anything yet.” It is better to say: “I understand that the process takes time, but I wanted to kindly ask for an update.”
Both are possible, and both have advantages.
A phone call is often faster. You may get an answer right away and do not have to wait again. If you feel comfortable with that, it can be a good option.
In most cases, an email is the easier way. You can take your time, read it again, and make sure you do not forget anything. You also have everything in writing. For many people, this feels easier, especially if German is not their first language.
You can use this example and add your own information:

Subject: Follow-up on my application from [date] for the position [job title]
Dear [Name],
On [date], I applied via Workeer for the position of [job title], and I have not received a response yet.
As I am very interested in the position, I wanted to ask about the current status of the application process and whether my documents were received.
I would be happy to hear from you.
Kind regards,
[Your name]
This is called ghosting. It can feel hurtful, but it says more about the company than about you. You are allowed to feel disappointed, that is completely normal. But try not to take it personally. If you still do not get an answer after following up, use your time and focus on better opportunities. They are out there waiting for you.
Getting a rejection is disappointing. That is completely normal, and you are allowed to feel that way. But a rejection does not mean that you are not good enough. It is simply part of the process that almost everyone goes through.
Sometimes it is just not the right match because another person had exactly the experience the company was looking for. That does not say anything about your value as a person.
Give yourself a moment to feel disappointed. That is okay.
Then keep going. Send the next application.
Ask yourself if there is something you can improve, but do not be too hard on yourself.
Remember: Every application is practice, and over time you will feel more confident.
Only waiting is not a good strategy. It is better to apply for several jobs at the same time. That is completely normal and increases your chances of finding a job.
