I, Farzana Markar, is a Sri Lankan national currently living in a detention camp in Tamil Nadu, India with my 11 year old son. We have been living in this camp since 28th November 2020 as we arrived in India by boat without proper documentation or visa. We were compelled to take this dangerous decision to protect our lives from the life threats we faced in Sri Lanka
I am a qualified software engineer by profession having 3 batcher's degrees in mathematics, Information technology and law from University of Colombo and University of London and worked as a software engineer for many years before I joined as a director to my husband's investment company. Due to mismanagement and fraud done by the employees and partners this company faced bankruptcy. Although I was an inactive member of this company, I was facing threats from all the investors and the real culprits who escaped after stealing money from the company.
Further, as my husband contested the parliament general election in the year of 2020, apart from
business enemies, there are political threats for our lives. They all are trying to harm us in very possible
way. Even our only home in Colombo has been taken over by our enemies. My husband was involved
in social services and did several community welfare projects in the Colombo city,Sri Lanka for many
years. He helped the poor and the destitute people. Since he was popular among the Colombo
community, he was encouraged by many of his friends and his company staff to enter into politics. As
per their advice, he started his political journey on his own and contested in the 2020 August general
elections for the Sri Lanka parliament as an independent candidate under the flower symbol. He
visited all corners of the Colombo city and, canvassed and campaigned against corruption, drugs and
erroneous policies of both then government and opposition candidates. He was well received by the
poor especially in the slums of Colombo.
