The UFZ
The Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ) with its 1,100 employees has gained an excellent reputation as an international competence centre for environmental sciences. We are part of the largest scientific organisation in Germany, the Helmholtz association. Our mission: Our research seeks to find a balance between social development and the long-term protection of our natural resources.
The job
Wetland green roof systems have great potential to treat domestic greywater on-site while improving the urban microclimate and biodiversity. Research is needed to understand the underlying dynamics and investigate the limitations of such systems to ensure secure water reuse. This project focuses on the effect of aeration and recirculation on the efficiency of greywater treatment and transformation of chemicals of concern in green roof systems. Experiments will be conducted using our pilot-scaled green roof systems treating canteen greywater on the UFZ Campus in Leipzig.

You will work close together with a doctoral researcher but also develop own approaches on the basis of your results.
- Optimizing aeration of our pilot-scaled green roof systems
- Taking care of and maintaining the green roof systems
- Planning und conducting experiments to investigate greywater treatment, contaminant transformation and microbial community under different redox-conditions in the green roof systems.
- Data analysis, interpretation and presentation of results
